Contraception Options at Solitaire Medical Group Women’s Clinic

Understanding Contraception

At Solitaire Medical Group Women’s Clinic, we understand that choosing the right contraception method is a personal decision that requires careful consideration. We’re here to provide you with expert guidance, tailored to your individual needs and preferences.

Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCP)

OCPs, also known as “the Pill,” are a popular form of hormonal contraception.
How They Work:
OCPs contain hormones (estrogen and progestin) that prevent ovulation, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.
Effectiveness:
When taken correctly, OCPs are highly effective at preventing pregnancy.
Advantages:
Easily reversible
May reduce menstrual cramps and regulate periods
Considerations:
Requires daily administration
Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Contraceptive Implants:

Implanon is a brand name for a contraceptive implant available in Australia that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It is a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) that protects against pregnancy for up to three years. The Implanon implant is a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick containing an etonogestrel hormone. Etonogestrel is a progestin hormone that works primarily by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) and thickening the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg.

Implanon is considered a highly effective form of contraception, with a failure rate of less than 1% per year with typical use. It is suitable for women who want long-term, low-maintenance contraception. However, it may not be ideal for women with certain medical conditions or those taking certain medications. It’s important to discuss the risks and benefits of Implanon with our Doctors before deciding if it is the right choice for you.

How do we perform this procedure:

Implanon insertion is a simple procedure that takes just a few minutes. Once inserted, the implant is effective immediately and does not require any ongoing effort on the user’s part. It can be removed at any time, and fertility typically returns quickly after removal.

What is it?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal (copper).
Hormonal IUD:
This type of IUD releases a small amount of progestin hormone into the uterus. This thickens the cervical mucus to block sperm and thins the uterus’s lining, reducing the likelihood of implantation if an egg is fertilised. Hormonal IUDs can prevent pregnancy for 3 to 5 years, depending on the brand.
Copper IUD:
The copper IUD does not contain hormones. Instead, it releases copper ions into the uterus, which are toxic to sperm, preventing fertilisation. The copper IUD can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years.
IUDs are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, with a failure rate of less than 1%. They are also reversible, meaning fertility returns quickly after removal. IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so it’s essential to use condoms if you are at risk of STIs.
