Cervical Screen Testing (Replacing Pap Smear) at Solitaire Medical Group Women’s Clinic
At Solitaire Medical Group Women’s Clinic, we’re dedicated to providing you with the most up-to-date and effective cervical screening care. Our approach aligns with the Australian Cervical Screening Program, which has played a crucial role in reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates across the country.
Understanding Cervical Screen Testing
Cervical cancer is a highly preventable condition. Through early detection and appropriate treatment, the chances of survival increase significantly. Thanks to the National Cervical Screening Program, introduced in 1991 and recently renewed by the Australian Government, incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer have seen a remarkable decline.
Advancements in Cervical Screening
The program’s recent enhancements have made it even more effective for all women, with an anticipated additional reduction of at least 20% in cervical cancer rates and deaths. These improvements are particularly significant for unvaccinated individuals.
Since 1 December 2017, the cervical screening test has replaced the Pap test, now focusing on detecting the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is responsible for nearly all cervical cancer cases. This new approach enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of the screening process.
Who Should Participate?
If you are a woman aged 25 to 74, have a cervix, and have ever been sexually active, you are eligible for cervical screening. It’s crucial to note that if you haven’t had a Cervical Screening Test since the program’s update in 2017, you are overdue.
Screening Options
Two screening options are available, and we encourage you to consult your doctor to determine which is most suitable for you.
How to Participate
Participating in cervical screening is straightforward. If you’re due for screening, you should have received an invitation or reminder. Contact your GP to schedule an appointment, and they will guide you through the necessary steps.
Self-Collection Option
For Australian women and individuals with a cervix, self-collection is a viable option. This method allows you to collect a sample under the supervision of a healthcare professional. While self-collection is highly effective in detecting HPV and preventing cervical cancer, it may not be suitable if you’re experiencing symptoms like unusual bleeding, discharge, or pain.
At Solitaire Medical Group Women’s Clinic, we’re committed to providing you with the highest standard of care, aligned with the latest advancements in cervical screening. Join us in prioritising your gynaecological health and well-being.
