What is it?
It is also known as medication abortion or medical abortion. MToP involves taking two types of medication: mifepristone and misoprostol. MToP is typically used in the early stages of pregnancy, up to 9 weeks (63 Days) of gestation
Here’s how MToP typically works:
- Mifepristone: This medication is taken first and works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is needed for the pregnancy to continue. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and the pregnancy cannot continue.
- Misoprostol: This medication is taken a day or two after mifepristone. It causes the uterus to contract, which helps expel the pregnancy tissue from the uterus.
MToP is typically used in the early stages of pregnancy, up to 10 weeks gestation in many countries. It is considered safe and effective, with a success rate of over 95% when used as directed.
It’s essential to have a medical consultation before undergoing MToP to ensure it is a safe option. Follow-up care is also crucial to confirm that the abortion is complete and to address any concerns or complications. MToP is legal in Australia and is considered a safe and effective option for ending an early pregnancy.
