Hand – de Queirvein’s tenosynovitis

What is De Quervain’s tenosynovitis?

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. It occurs when the tendons at the base of your thumb become irritated or constricted, causing pain and swelling. This condition is common in people who perform repetitive hand or wrist movements, such as lifting, gripping, or twisting. Symptoms of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis may include Pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, Difficulty moving the thumb and wrist, especially when grasping or pinching, A “catching” or “snapping” sensation when moving the thumb

Conservative treatment for de Quervain’s tenosynovitis may include Resting the affected hand and avoiding activities that aggravate the symptoms, splint, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation, Physical therapy to improve range of motion and strength in the thumb and wrist, Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and pain in the affected area

How do we perform this procedure:

Surgery for de Quervain’s tenosynovitis, known as a “release” or “release surgery,” is a procedure to alleviate the constriction of the tendons at the base of the thumb. This is considered when conservative treatments, such as rest, splinting, and medication, have not provided relief.
Under local anesthesia, the tendons are released through a small incision at the thumb’s base or on the wrist’s side. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures or adhesive strips.

Post-op care:

  • Recovery from de Quervain’s release surgery is usually relatively quick. Patients may experience some discomfort and swelling after the surgery, but this typically improves within a few days. Physical therapy or exercises may be recommended to improve strength and flexibility in the thumb and wrist.
  • Keep the surgical site clean and dry and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities for a few weeks.
  • Pain medication may be prescribed to manage any discomfort.
