If your mammogram or other diagnostic tests signal a high probability of breast cancer, your physician will order a biopsy. In a biopsy, a surgeon extracts a minute quantity of breast tissue for examination of cancer cells. We provide two biopsy options:

  • Needle biopsy – also known as core needle biopsy or stereotactic breast biopsy. This outpatient procedure employs stereotactic (3D) mammography, ultrasound, or CT scan guidance to direct a needle to the suspicious breast lump. A sample is collected via the needle and forwarded to a laboratory for analysis.
  • Surgical biopsy – during this procedure, a surgeon incises the suspicious breast tissue to procure a sample, subsequently assessed in a laboratory for cancer. Many of our breast surgeons offer minimally-invasive surgical alternatives.

Breast Cancer Surgery

Surgery remains the predominant mode of breast cancer treatment. The prevalent surgery types are:

  • Lumpectomy surgery – recognised as breast-conserving surgery. It involves removing the cancerous tumour and adjacent tissue from the breast. Lumpectomy is frequently accompanied by radiation therapy.
  • Mastectomy – this surgery entails the removal of one or both breasts.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy employs drugs or drug combinations to assail and eradicate cancer cells. Administered intravenously or orally, chemotherapy generally follows surgery and precedes radiation therapy. It aims to impede the growth of any cancer cells that might have spread outside the breast.

Radiation

Radiation therapy employs targeted high-energy rays to obliterate residual cancer cells post-surgery. Painless and well-tolerated, radiation sessions are brief. Not all breast cancer patients necessitate radiation, contingent on cancer type, surgical approach, and potential lymph node or body area involvement.

Hormone Therapy

Approximately 60% of breast cancers react to or thrive with naturally-produced estrogen/progesterone. These are termed estrogen/progesterone-positive cancers. Hormone therapy is remarkably effective against these cancer types. It operates by obstructing hormones that foster tumour growth.
