What is it
An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms around an infection. It can occur anywhere in the body and is usually characterised by swelling, redness, warmth, and pain. Bacteria, parasites, or foreign substances can cause abscesses. Treatment typically involves draining the pus and, in some cases, antibiotics.
What do we do
Treatment typically involves draining the pus under local anaesthetic and, in some cases, antibiotics.
The usual practice is not to stitch the wound after draining the pus but to let it close on its own. This is called secondary wound healing. Usually, the wound heals very quickly after the pus is drained out.
Who performs this surgery
All the GPs in this clinic do the abscess drainage, but if the abscesses are huge, it might need admission to the hospital for the abscess to be drained under general anaesthetic
Charges
Depending on the abscess size, there is a Charge of $100-$250 in addition to the Medicare rebate. The operating Doctor will explain the Gap charges before performing the procedure.
Post-op care:
Dressings: The surgical wound will need regular dressing till the wound has healed.
Keep the wound dressings dry and clean. If the dressing is soaked for some reason, please call us back to get the dressing changed by the practice nurse
Activity: There could be a period of rest for a few days, but it is a good practice to keep yourself mobile and active to have good blood flow throughout your body, which helps in quicker healing.
Diet: Follow a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support healing.
