Medication Disposal

At Solitaire Medical Group, we offer a safe and convenient way to dispose of your expired or unwanted medicines. Our pharmacy on-site handles this process, ensuring that it is done in an environmentally friendly manner. Additionally, we provide medication reviews for patients who are on more than four medications, require specific gadgets, or are prescribed potentially toxic medications. This annual review is conducted at the patient’s home, and any expired medications are taken with them. This service is Commonwealth funded, further emphasising our commitment to your well-being.

National Return and Disposal of Unwanted Medicines Program (NatRUM)

The National Return and Disposal of Unwanted Medicines Program (NatRUM) is a service funded by the Australian Government that supports the safe disposal of expired and unwanted medicines.

Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM Project)

Storage of expired and unwanted medicines in the home can be dangerous, and unsafe disposal of unwanted medicines can lead to environmental damage. There is a free and convenient way to dispose of your unwanted medicines responsibly via your local pharmacy, and it’s called Return Unwanted Medicines (or The RUM Project).

In 2015-16 pharmacists collected well over 700,000kg of unwanted medicines, which was an increase of 7.7% from 2014-15 collections. During the financial year almost 150,000 RUM bins were delivered to community pharmacies by pharmacy wholesalers around Australia. Of the RUM bins collected, 30% were from pharmacies in NSW, while 25% came from community pharmacies in Victoria. All states and territories contribute to the total number of RUM bins collected by the wholesalers, with ACT and NT providing just 1% each.
